BESCHREIBUNG: Computer on Wall Street - Three million dollars worth of high-powered electronic data processing equipment sits temporarily on the sidewalk before it is moved into the Wall Street offices of Bache & Company. Bache, one of the world's largest stock brokerage houses leases the IBM 705 Model III computer to handle its increasing number of stock transactions. The computer enables the company to complete the paperwork on its average of 6,500 daily trades in 12 hours -- in half the time needed previously. In addition to processing purchases and sales, the system maintains stock records, performs margin and bookkeeping operations and prepares monthly customer statements. The data processing system also enables Bache & Company to speed preparation on customer portfolio analyses. The 705 Model III can add a column of 11,400 five-digit figures in a second and make 45,400 logical decisions in a second. It can store 40,000 digits of information internally and millions more on magnetic tape.
