BESCHREIBUNG: Current magnetic storage density limitations due to superparamagnetic effects can be overcome by thermally assisted writing. This image shows: Laser diode focused onto a cantilever heats the tip, which transfers energy to the magnetic film, thereby heating it and reducing its coercivity locally. A magnetic bias field is applied by a coil to align magnetization in the heated region. A scanning Kerr microscope is used to observe the recorded domains. For high resolution imaging a magnetic force microscope is used to measure the recorded bits.
