The 440 core employs the scalable and flexible Book E enhanced Power Architecture optimized for embedded applications. The licensable embedded core integrates a superscalar seven-stage pipeline, with support for two instructions per clock, separate instruction and data caches, a JTAG port, trace FIFO, multiple timers and a memory management unit (MMU), with 2.0 DMIPS/MHz performance. The PowerPC 440 core is complemented by a floating point unit which can attach to the processor's APU interface, for those applications that need hardware support for these operations. Additionally, an L2 cache interface with up to 256KB of SRAM can provide additional on-chip memory capacity. The PowerPC 440 core's performance, power specifications and design attributes make it an ideal solution for emerging wired communications, consumer, storage and embedded computing applications.
