Aufbauend auf neuer Hard- und Software-Architektur ermöglicht das IBM System Storage TS7700 den Aufbau einer Virtual Tape Grid-Computing-Umgebung. Als Nachfolger des IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Servers (VTS) vereint die TS7700 die Kapazität und Datenintegrität der IBM System Storage TS1120-Bandlaufwerke mit leistungsfähigen Plattensystemen und einem Controller, der auf der IBM System p-Technologie basiert. Die TS7700 enthält einen TS7740 Server, der die Anbindung von bis zu vier FICON-Kanälen ermöglicht, und Verbindungen an Tape Libraries und Bandspeicherlaufwerke für Back-End-Bandverarbeitung. Außerdem kann ein TS7700 mit Grid-Funktionen auch an ein anderes TS7700 angebunden werden, um peer-to-peer-Kopiermöglichkeiten zwischen den Virtualization Engines für Band auf der Basis von IP-Netzwerkverbindungen bereitzustellen. Der TS7740 Server-Cache stellt über 6 TB (Terabyte) an Tape Volume-Cachekapazität vor Kompression bereit. Jedes TS7700 unterstützt bis zu 128 IBM 3490E Virtual Tape Drives und bis zu 500.000 logische Volumes, jedes mit einer maximalen Kapazität von 1,2 Gigabyte (bei 3:1-Kompression) bis zu 12 Gigabyte (bei 3:1-Kompression und Nutzung von Volume-Größen zwischen 400 und 4000 MB). Through the implementation of a fully integrated tiered storage hierarchy of disk and tape, the benefits of both technologies can be leveraged to help enhance performance and provide the capacity needed for today€s tape processing requirements. Deploying this innovative subsystem may help reduce batch processing time, total cost of ownership and management overhead. The TS7700 Virtualization Engine has been designed to reduce or eliminate a number of bottlenecks that may be present in any given tape environment. Any reduction in bottlenecks will vary depending on the characteristics of installed equipment and workload, but reducing bottlenecks can help reduce batch processing time.
